One thing that has been popular for decades happen to be driving games. It doesn’t matter if you are a geek or not one because it just seems that driving games are just loved by almost everyone of all ages.
Let us take a walk down memory lane and talk about the top 5 best ever Racing games @ BGames
5. Pole Position
Namco started Pole Position back in the year 1982 and it was probably one of the best first racing games ever. Let’s take a look at some of the pro’s this game had back in 1982:
- First game that required a time trial lap.
- Considering it was released back in 1982 it had good graphics.
- Track was based on a real and not fake racing circuit.
Not at all bad for a game back in 1982. It did a lot of neat things.
4. Pitstop/Pitstop 2
Pitstop/Pitstop 2 games were released back in 1983/1984. You could tell that the pitstop formula was under the influence of other games like Indy 500, Lotus Esprit Turbo Challenge and Gran Turismo. What feature had you not heard yet back in 1983/1984?
- You could boast two player racing but without having to worry about slowdown being noticeable. This was a huge feature to add on to a game since it had not been done yet and changed things.
You could also repair car damage and that was used as one of the main selling points of this game.
Did you know that the game Hang-On was one of the first driving games ever to update the genre which involved bike racking? Hang-On experienced a new level with the 3D sprites and the graphics that was used in the game. Can you guess some of the games that got influenced by Hang-On?
- Enduro Racer
- And many other games….
Hang-On was released back in 1985 and the release made motorcycle driving gaming even more popular.
2. Turbo Esprit (Durell)
Perhaps, this game was ahead of its time when it was released back in 1986. In order to drive around in this game it used a 3D open world environment. Can you guess what games were influenced by Turbo Esprit?
- Grand Theft Auto III and other Grand Theft Auto series
- Plus many others
3D has been around for a very long time as you can see by these driving games.
Driver was released back in the year 1999 and it made the driving experience totally unique. Drivers could now have the freedom of going continually on non-looped landscapes which were free forming. Game designers got inspired by Driver and even today you can still see some of the influences from this game. What games are influenced by driver?
- Driver 2
- The Getaway
- GTA III
- True Crime
- And others
Driving still seemed to be limited to driving along the side and main roads but it was still a huge improvement compared to the other games.
Let us not forget about these games…
While I have mentioned the top 5 most popular driving games known to mankind let us not forget other games such as Gran Turismo, Sega Rally Championship, Ridge Racer, Test Drive 2, OutRun, Hard Driving’, Enduro Racer and Buggy Boy.
Have driving games changed a lot over the years? In some ways they have and in other ways they have not. There are still some things that they could improve on but they are getting there and trying to make it to where people have the best time ever driving racing gaming when they are gaming.
If you are still not happy with the racing games available just give it some time and reflect back to how things have already changed over the years.
