Philippine Rugby Team or more popularly known as the Philippine Volcanoes gained much more attention after a controversial billboard of them caught the eye of the public and government officials as well. But aside from that billboard, the Philippine Volcanoes do have more things to show; that is their Rugby talent.
Philippines national rugby union team (Volcanoes) represents the Philippines in international rugby union. Although the Volcanoes has not yet reached the Rugby World Cup, the team have been playing in the Division I at Asian 5 Nations tournaments since 2008.
Philippine Volcanoes – Philippine Rugby Team TIMELINE and HIGHLIGHTS
1998 – PRFU of The Philippine Rugby Football Union was formed.
2005 – Philippine National Sevens Rugby Team got the gold medal in the Southeast Asian Games Rugby Sevens Tournament Indonesia, 32-5 (A big winning margin indeed!) in Manila.
2006 – Team Philippines captured its international test match debut against Guam (18-14) with the majority of the squad composed of long term expatriate residents and a small number of Filipino players. At the month of December year of 2006, the Philippine Under-19 team went undefeated in the Asian Rugby Football Union (ARFU) Under-19 Second Division Tournament.
2007 – a year where the team do have an all-Filipino contingent selected for the 24th South East Asian games in Thailand. Philippine rugby union team reached the Medal rounds after 2 days of hard fought pool matches. They defeated Malaysia in the semi-finals. At the finals, the Philippines was matched against the home side Thailand. Thailand team won it via a 29 – 14 victory. The Silver Medal award at the South East Asian Games opened doors for the expansion and development of our rugby team.
2008 – The Philippine Rugby Football Union gained full membership to the International Rugby Board (IRB). At this year as well, the Philippines dominated the fourth-tier of the ARFU Asian 5 Nations Series. Philippine team got the inaugural Division 4 title. The highlight of the said tournament is when the Philippines dominated the Brunei team (101-0) and defeated the home team Guam (20-8). A very large scoring margin dominated by the Philippine team.
2009 – Philippine team won the Asian 5 Nations Division III rugby tournament. Philippines were promoted to the Asian Five Nations Division II tournament.
2010 – Philippines competed in the Asian 5 Nations Division II tournament and won it beating India in the final on a score of 44-12. This year, the team played in ARFU Rugby 7s tournaments in Shanghai, Borneo and the Asian Games in Guangzhou.
As you can see at the above details and timeline, our very own Rugby team do have a winning history with large margins over their opponents. This just mean that the VOLCANOES do have what it takes to compete and beat out their counterparts. We (Filipinos) have a good future
at this sports in my opinion. You what do you think?

NICE>>>> SUPER HUNK ANG MGA PLAYERS!!!
hi. is it really free to join? i have no background on this sport but i really wanna try it,
Please! No more mention of the underwear! This team is bound for greater ventures in life and to inspire young Filipinos that there is life beyond basketball!!
Totaly agree with your assessment of our 2007 SEA games Silver Medal win in Thailand. I was the Assistant Manager of the squad in 2007. The players did not just aquit themselves on the field but off it gaining a lot of “respect” amongst their Thai Liasion workers who were crying for us when Thailand their own National side won the Gold Medal against us & more importatntly members of the PSC & POC committee & staff. Each morning the players would assist administrative staff members stock the Philippine Village water supply. They moved cabinets and tables for female administration staff when they realised they were in need of help. They were model athletes in Thailand. It was in the nature of our winning the Philippines a Silver medal in Thailand that the players & coaching & management staff laid the foundations for the acceptance of the sport into mainstream Filipino culture!
this is sport is really cool for guys like me who loves the hustle. a hard contact sport for real strong guys
cool.. i wanna try it..pano mag join??
I WISH ALL THE PLAYERS, COACHES, STAFF AND EVERYONE INVOLVED IN THE TEAM GOOD LUCK. I WISH ALL THE FILIPINOS ALL OVER THE WORL D WOULD SUPPORT THE TEAM AND FOR SPONSORS TO POUR SO THAT THE SPORT WILL HAVE ITS MUCH NEEDED BOOST. JUST HOPE THAT SPONSORS WOULD FULLY SUPPORT THE TEAM AND THE SPORT ITSELF AND NOT JUST THINK OF PROMOTING THEIR PRODUCTS.
HI.. this is the first time that i see this kind of game. its inspired so much cause i like the diffficulties. in life before and now i realy wanted to join your group.. thats all gud luck to your career.. i pray that your team will be succcesful.
Congratulations Philippine Volcanoes! You’ve once again made the country proud!
I never expected that i’ll be admiring Phillipine Rugby Team, but bringing home the bacon is a real pride for us Filipinoes….keep it up VOLCANO….hope to see you personally and I could take pictures with you and ur signatures as well that I will surely treausure the most!!!;-)
what can i say , they become sensational because of the controversial advertisements maybe because the sport is not that popular to us. It was a strategic marketing and publicity to make them popular and the value gets higher . I just wish more native filipinos are members of the teams to really represent the Philippines .
I am hoping for a pure blooded Filipino team as well. But as long as they give glory to the Philippines, then I will continue to support them.
I agree with you on that. If that doesn’t get anyone’s attention, I don’t know what will.
As for having more native Filipinos in the game, I guess it will happen in time. Of course, it depends if there will be more Filipinos that will become interested with the sport. Personally, I’m not surprised that most, if not all, of the players are only half-Filipino, just like the Azkals. These are sports that are not really that popular in the country if you compare it with other countries. It’s a good start that they’re bringing it here and getting us introduced in these kinds of sports.
Can’t agree more with that Adeline. Great insights.
The Philippine Rugby Team is making waves on the field and as well as becoming credible endorsers. What can I say, everyone loves a winner.
Hope they can continue what good things they started. Thanks bro.
I honestly did not know about Philippine Rugby or the Volcanoes Team until that controversial Bench billboards came out. Haha!
They have accomplished a lot since 1998. I hope that they continue to bring glory to our country through sports.
And I appreciate those abs, too. =)
That BENCH billboard gave them huge boost. I wish they can use that boost to win competitions. Thanks for the comment!
I’m so proud of our team, The Philippines Rugby Team – Philippine Volcanoes!
Me too, thanks Justin.
I wonder why ngayon lang sila naging kilala, if they have been around since 2008? Also I’m curious as to why their coined as Philippine Volcanoes
Thanks Dems for dropping by. I guess, the name is derived from their attitudes? And oh, one of their members nickname is ERUPTION.
Wow! I enjoyed your photos… a lot! LOL!
Glad you enjoyed it! lol. Thanks Rizza!
I love you eruption…and I’m so proud of the Philippine Rugby Team!!!!!GO Volcanoes!!!!
Wow, I like the photos especially those abs.. hahaha!! they’re so handsome and talented!
I think they haven’t been popular unlike the other sports team but they have already won many tournaments. Be proud to be Pinoy!
-visit from BCB 10/02
Impressive.. i mean their achievements, not the photos.. alright, including the photos. Haha. Its just sad that most of our athletes remain unnoticed and lack support despite the honor they’re bringing. They need to be in a controversy pa for them to be noticed.
Let’s expect them to be on even more billboards and other endorsements as they keep up their successful international streak! Philippine sports, not just rugby and football, are generally on their way up and I’m very proud of that fact.
i remember seeing them regularly back in 2009 or 2010 when I was still employed in one of our country’s leading telco. my husband (who was still my bf that time) used to play rugby, along with his officemates (we were employed on the same company before i resigned). and they were training with The Volcanoes at Ultra. and whenever they have tournaments, I used to watch them too. Now, I asked (err, pleaded) my husband to stop playing na because of the injury he might get. He was actually rushed to the hospital once because of a minor injury. Now, he plays another sports na lang, hihi!
