People of this era or generation don’t just turn on their radio to listen to their favorite songs and music. Sometimes, they just wanted to hear stories being shared on air by their favorite DJs. Sometimes, they just wanted to have a good laugh by the jokes and the now famous “pick up lines” the DJs are sharing with each other. If you will notice, nowadays, DJs plays a very important role into the success of their show and station.
That being said, I immediately asked my good online DJ friend for an interview regarding her life being a DJ and some cool stuffs she can share. I am lucky enough to email-interview one of the hottest and vibrant DJ of our generation; Emma Harot. Here she goes.
1). Please tell our readers a little something about you and your career.

2). Since when you started into this kind of career? What made you started?
I started this career since 2005. Actually it’s one of my dreams since laki nmn ako sa radio station ‘coz I love music so much part talga ng buhay ko musika. Kaya nag take ako ng Mass Communication para balang araw maging reporter ako o DJ. I want to be someone na napapanuod ko sa TV. So after 2 job experience, nag audition ako sa isang RADIO STATION baon ang lakas ng loob kahit wala akong idea how to go with the audition. Then my first trial was not a success. I never gave it up till narinig ulit ng mom ko they were looking for a DJ again same station. That’s when it started. Sa 93.9 IFM na dati kong pinapakinnggan during KC FM pa sya. Then after 3 1/2 years in RMN (93.9 IFM) as RICKEE KULIT night time DJ, I got the oppurtunity to be with MBC 101.1 YES FM as EMMA HAROT. I grabbed the opportunity after a year of thinking.
I started with this career last 2005. Actually, it is one of my dreams since I grew up listening to radio stations because I love music so much. Music is really a part of my life. I took up Mass Communication for me to be able to become a reporter or DJ someday. I want to be someone who is always seen at televisions. After trying to 2 jobs, I audition in a certain radio station with hope and faith even though I have no clue how the audition will be done. I failed at my first try but I never gave up. When my mom heard that they are looking for a new radio DJ again, I took the chance and that when it all started. It was at the 93.9 IFM which I used to listen with during the KC FM days. After 3 1/2 years in RMN (93.9FM) as RICKEE KULIT night time DJ, I took the opportunity to be with MBC 101.1 YES FM as EMMA HAROT. I grabbed the opportunity after a year of thinking.
3). What are the advantages and disadvantages of being a popular radio DJ like you?
Being a Radio Personality is an HONOR for me coz not all pwedeng maging DJ and its a non stop competition na kailangan lagi kang may baong katatwanan para kagiliwan ka ng mga nakikinig sayo. or something extra special na mag lalagay sayo sa itaas para maging top of the MIND ka ng bawat taong may RADIO. Minsan para karing artista sa mgataong nakikinig sayo na alam mo sa sarili mo di nmn kayo nag kaka layo pero with the way they looked at you alam mong ur way up there lalo na pag naging TOP DJ ka in the philippines. MAdami kag akikilalag tao kung saan saan ka pwedeng makarting makapunta and you have the power to TALK na alam mong PAKIKINGGAN Ka. madaming benifits actually discounts freebies gifts at kung anu ano pa.
Being a radio personality is really an honor for me because not all can become a DJ. Being a DJ is a non stop competition wherein you always have to say or do something new, fresh and laughable for your listeners to be entertained just by listening to you and for you, as a DJ to become the “top of the mind” whenever a listener turned on his or her radio. There are times wherein you are treated like a famous celebrity but for you, you aren’t and you are just at the same level of people who listens to you. Being a top DJ in the Philippines also gave you some sort of fame and the power of talk or communicating wherein you will know that when you started to talk, people will start to listen. Also, benefits are there, discounts, freebies, gifts and sponsorships. The disadvantage of being aa DJ is that, people can now criticize and talk about you and the way you do your job. No definite time of work, its like being a doctor, you always have to be available 24/7 when your job calls. Also, there will be people who won’t be pleased with the way you talk.
4). What is your most memorable experience as a radio DJ?
Naku memorable sa akin yung nakakalimutan kong patayin yung microphone ko at nadidinig yung pinag sasabi ko ng liseners. hahaha.
The most memorable moment for me as a radio DJ is when I forgot to turn off my microphone (supposedly off air) and my listeners heard ALL things (things that they shouldn’t heard) I am talking about. Hahaha.
5). Can you give some tips or advice to our readers on how to become a cool DJ?
Just be yourself be confident in what you really want to say because what you say will be heard. Dapat focus ka sa ginagawa mo and learn how to set aside personal problems pag nakaupo kana sa programa mo kasi you are there to entertain and make your listeners feel happy. Lastly, always think of your work as your last radio program kasi you’ll never know, that could be your last.
